When I went to my grandparents' house my grandmother would keep me
busy by giving me sewing projects so I wouldn’t ruin her furniture. At first, I didn't
appreciate it because it was difficult and I would get frustrated easily, but now that
I'm older I realize what my grandmother was really trying to do. Trying to teach
my patience, methods of construction, and share a part of her life with me in which
she used to support her family.
In my work, I have been concentrating on wearable garments, fabric
incorporation, and photography. I make art that is inspired by my family and the
relationships we have developed. I use my knowledge of my subject, and my
relationships with them, to make deeper and more holistic portraits that represent
their roles in our family and in my life. Due to the recent pandemic, my art practice
in garment making has been interrupted; however, I have been taking this
opportunity to document this time in quarantine and how it has affected my family
and I. I am collecting sound, taking photographs on my phone, and journaling as
often as I can. I have lost many resources due to the pandemic so I feel the quality
of the devices I am using will also speak to the work. My goal is to find ways in
which this documentation can bleed into my art practices successfully.
Stay safe and stay healthy.
